When you think of the dog breed “Poodle,” what images does your mind think of? Perhaps you think about the image of a perfectly groomed dog with a hairstyle to rival a beauty queen. While some might believe that Poodle handlers decide on which hairstyle to promote a regal appearance for their treasured dog, the truth is a bit more complex than that. Indeed, Poodles were originally bred as water dogs and a hunter would have to shave a dogs coat to decrease water dragging; patches of hair were left on the leg joints so that cold water or debris would not hurt the dog. Haircuts became more popular, exaggerated and elaborate when traveling gypsies and then the French, began using the Poodle breed for circus performances.
Today, Poodles may be present in a show ring with a large number of different clips or hairstyles; clips used on Poodles who are being shown are referred to as “show clips,” to differentiate them from a “pet clip.” Pet clips are not suitable for the show ring and for dogs that do not compete. Show clips are very time consuming and expert groomers estimate that a show clip may take about 10 hours per week for grooming and maintenance. Most people who own Poodles send them to a professional groomer and this can make a show clip quite expensive. Once a decision is made to no longer show the dog, the owner often decides to stop doing the show clip and allow the Poodle to transition into a pet clip.
The American Kennel Club has three show clips that are acceptable, though only one is allowable for a puppy under 12 months old. The Puppy Clip involves shaving the face, feet, throat and base of the tail;and a puppy may have their coat shaped with a scissors to give a neater appearance overall. For a Poodle puppy older than 12 months of age, the dog must sport either a Continental Clip or English Saddle Clip; these are very elaborate hairstyles that have become synonymous with Poodles. The Continental Clip is the more popular choice and involves shaving the face, throat and parts of the tail and both feet. Both the ankles, front and back, have pompoms; the upper part of the front legs are half-shaved, while the hindquarters are completely shaved, with the exception of the pompoms. An owner may select to leave two separate pompoms on an area over the hips; and the end of the tail is also clipped into a pompom. A full coat is then left over the rest of the entire body, though some shaping is allowable. The English Saddle Clip is recognized in the American Kennel Club show ring and is not very popular. This clip differs from the Continental Clip only in the hindquarters, which are not completely shaved off. In this clip there are three pompoms left on the hindquarters.

Trent Consultants News South Korean scientist wins court battle over dog cloning

Trent Consultants News: SEOUL - Disgraced South Korean scientist Hwang Woo-Suk has won a copyright battle over dog-cloning techniques his colleagues said Saturday.
A Seoul district court on Friday ruled that his cloning technology is different from procedures patented by the Seoul National University.
RNL Bio, which bought the patent from the university, filed a lawsuit against the Sooam Biotech Research Center led by Hwang a year ago after Hwang’s team produced cloned dogs for a foreign biotech company.
“The court accepted that Sooam’s technology is a new invention, which is different from the existing technique bought by RNL Bio from the Seoul National University,” Hwang’s colleague Hyun Sang-Hwan told AFP.
An RNL Bio official said the company was considering an appeal.
A team of researchers at the Seoul National University produced the world’s first cloned dog, an Afghan hound named Snuppy, in 2005, under Hwang’s stewardship.
But Hwang was later fired by the university after his landmark studies on cloned human stem cells in 2004 and 2005 were exposed as fraudulent.
Hwang has no claim over the university’s dog cloning technology as South Korean law states that intellectual property developed by a government-run institution belongs to the state.
Prosecutors here last month demanded a four-year jail term for Hwang, who is on trial for fraud, embezzlement and ethical breaches in connection with the fraudulent research.

When you have been in the “wild” for a number of days without a bath or a shave, how do you feel? Pretty raunchy, right? You’re totally ready to wash all that gunk off of you and start to resemble a normal human being again. Well, the same is true for your dog, up to a certain point.
Yes, it’s true that dogs don’t have a system of logic going on in their brains that tells them that they smell bad. Neither do you. Yours is a learned behavior. Early man stunk, folks. He was ripe all the time and everyone just accepted this. It was a part of the daily routine. Just like your dog. Man is the only species that does not react simply out of instinct or habit alone. He can reason. That’s what makes us the highest species. Believe it or not, dogs can reason too, especially after a grooming.
Tony Roettger, of Spaniel Journal, says that if a thing can be trained, such as a dog, it can reason. Maybe the reasoning is on a lower level than humans but it can reason and the more it is forced to reason, the better it gets and the more frequently it uses reasoning to make decisions, the more evident it becomes. Reasoning is a form of conditioning, is it not and vice versa. Conditioning is a form of reasoning.
With that said, let us do some reasoning of our own. When a person takes their dog to the groomer’s shop and the dog is given the full treatment, including bath,haircut, nails trimmed appropriately, nails polished, ribbons in the hair (in some cases) and a doggie perfume or cologne placed on them, they probably hate the entire affair because they don’t have the capability to reason the reason for what they’re going through; however, what is your reaction when you pick them up from the groomers? You’re usually very excited, you talk to the dog and tell them how good they look, your voice conveys approval and happiness. So, what do you think the dog may be reasoning here?
Our guess is that the animal, after being groomed and receiving your obvious gratuities and love begins to understand that this grooming process, which he hates, brings accolades and love from his owner so how bad can it really be? He knows that he’s not going to be harmed so he begins to associate the grooming process with your love and attention. Hey, even men do this type of reasoning, right?
So, the question is not so much, “do they know they’re being groomed,” but rather, “do they associate the grooming with good feelings and do they feel good about themselves once they are groomed?”
The truth is, your dog may not actually “like” the grooming process but they accept it. They probably associate your attention with the process although they don’t have any idea why you’re happy. They just know you are and if you’re happy, that’s ok with them because they love you, unconditionally.
So, don’t hesitate to get your dog groomed frequently from a reputable and highly touted groomer. They make you feel good about your dog and the dog can feel that because…he reasons it out. And you want him to feel good because you love him, right?

Actually, like some people I know - most dogs couldn’t care less about their appearance and couldn’t be happier than when they’re rolling around the ground on something stinky they’ve found. Unfortunately for them, “essence of DOG” isn’t a favorite scent of humans and wading through bales of shedding dog hair left on the furniture is way overrated. So until our canine companions totally take over, they’ll have to live with us grooming them and trying to keep their coats healthy and shiny looking.
Pet salons provide a full array of grooming services and many people opt to avail themselves of their services. Prices are usually reasonable and all the mess and fuss are left to the professionals. However, for a variety of reasons not everyone elects to go this route; some don’t bother grooming at all and others just do it themselves at home.
