Dog grooming is relatively simple for most dogs. I have a greyhound and spend about 5 minutes per day on dog grooming. For dogs that have short hair, they need to be brushed, maybe once per week. For dogs with long hair, the grooming is more time consuming. This is an important consideration when selecting a breed. Beyond regularly brushing your dog’s coat and giving him or her periodic baths, you may want to consider a few other things.
Certain dogs’ nails grow faster than others and need to be clipped. It’s not enough to walk your dog on the street in hopes that the nails will wear down. If the nails get too long, it could be uncomfortable for the dog and might make it difficult to walk. Either clip the dog’s nails yourself, but be careful not to clip too much off, or go to your local groomer who will clip the nails for roughly $5.
Lastly, think about cleaning your dog’s ears every so often. Dust, dirt and wax can accumulate. Take a tissue and clean the ears, but don’t go too deep. This is also a good idea if you see your dog scratching his or her ears or shaking his or her head. Lastly, a few dog breeds are predisposed to having poor teeth, e.g., greyhounds and whippets. Therefore, brushing the dog’s teeth every other day is crucial. Otherwise, your dog might be uncomfortable and you may be facing some costly dental bills.
My above comments are focused on basic grooming, but you have to make sure you are providing your dog proper nutrition and medicines as well. With medicines, don’t forget to regularly get your dog inoculated - especially for rabies and don’t forget to give him or her monthly heartworm pills - if you don’t opt for a veterinary shot.

Why pay a groomer? Grooming a Yorkshire Terrier at home is cheaper, and it’s easy enough anyone can learn to do it.
Here are a few tips to help you get started grooming Yorkshire Terriers.
1. If you’ve never groomed a dog before, get a good book or video to teach you the basics.
2. Be sure to purchase the supplies you need before your first grooming session. You’ll need a dog shampoo and conditioner, dog clippers, a pin brush, a fine-tooth flea comb, dog nail trimmers, and a metal comb with long teeth. If you want to brush your dog’s teeth and clean his ears, you’ll also need supplies to do this, or you can opt to take your dog to the groomer for an occasional session to perform these tasks.
3. Start early to get your dog used to grooming. Yorkshire terriers need to be groomed often, so as soon as your new puppy is used to his surroundings, start getting him used to standing on a table while you brush his coat, lift his paws, and massage his ears. This is also a good time to introduce him to the sound of the clippers and a hair dryer.
4. On bath day, check the coat for mats and snarls, and pull these apart with your fingers and a pin brush.
5. Use warm water and be sure to get your dog’s coat entirely wet before applying shampoo. You’ll want to use a good quality dog shampoo (not people shampoo) for grooming your Yorkshire terrier. Make sure to rinse the coat thoroughly.
6. You can use a dog dryer or a human hair dryer after the bath to dry your dog’s hair. Use a low or medium setting and leave the hair just slightly damp so you don’t dry out your dog’s skin.
7. Trim the hair under the pads of the feet and the top third of the ears.
8. Finish grooming the Yorkshire terrier by using a metal comb with long teeth and a pin brush to comb the coat.

For most people, and to think you can call them responsible pet owners, grooming their dog is a total waste of time. Hey, dogs go anywhere they go and they could be coming back at night from having a good time at a sewer tank or something like. Hey, dogs are just dogs and they normally love to get themselves dirty and grooming them is just extra work. You know, there are actually people who would think that way but luckily for dogs who are under your care, they can feel that they are well-loved because of the things you show to them and even just trying to groom them is more than just a sign of total dog hygiene and owner hygiene, it’s also a sign of stronger bond between man and animal. And it’s the reason why there are lots of dog grooming supplies that you can find all over the place.
Good grooming practices are essential for maintaining health and happiness for you and your dog and it could be the best therapy, too. Ticks and lice would swarm like, well, ticks and lice and it can get the better of your family even though your beagle is staying and sleeping outside of your house. He can get smelly, too. After the shower, it will now be the perfect time to wipe the dog with a towel and blow dry its hair. This should be done with the dog on a table. If the owner wishes, he can trim the hair at this point.

Do you have to start grooming your Schnauzer dog but you don’t really know how you can do this? If this is the case then don’t worry because I will give you all the tips that you need to successfully groom your schnauzer.
Schnauzer Grooming Tips
1) When you want to brush you schnauzer’s hair and dead skin, make sure that your dog is sitting on a towel.
2)You should place a rubber mat at the bottom of your bathtub. This way you’ll prevent your dog from getting an injury because of slipping.
3) Try to carefully place your schnauzer in your bathtub, when this has been done you should make the fur of your dog wet. However, try to avoid the eyes and the ears. Especially when you are applying the shampoo.
4) Another good schnauzer grooming tip is to try to swipe with a damp cotton ball across the eyes of your schnauzer. This way, you will be able to remove any dirt from the corners of the eyes.
5) Once your dog is clean, drain the tub and place your dog on a towel that has been put on the floor already. After your dog is sitting on the towel, grab a large towel so you can dry your dog.

7) This is probably the hardest part of the schnauzer grooming process. Brushing the teeth of your dog. When doing this you should gently open your dog’s mouth and then, while you use a special dog toothbrush, you clean your dog’s teeth.

Probably the most difficult - and misunderstood - aspect of taking care of your dog’s grooming needs is keeping your dog’s toenails short.
Often, I’ve been asked “how to” do this and NOT hurt or cause your dog’s nails to bleed. It’s really simple. Follow these easy steps and you’re sure to be on your way.
First, make sure you always shorten your dog’s nails using “positive” reinforcement. What’s that? Well, it’s associating (in your dog’s mind) something your dog “likes” with the experience of shortening your dog’s nails.
I find that treats or some other food works well. But, positive reinforcement can also come from “belly rubs”… or… “the tone of your voice”… or… “a favorite toy”. Basically, positive reinforcement is anything your dog enjoys. The key is to make sure you provide this positive reinforce before, during and after the nail shortening process.
Second, I DO NOT recommend cutting your dog’s nails. What I suggest instead is “grinding” or “filing” your dog’s nails, using a woman’s nail file… or… a professional grinder. This will keep you from going too low and hitting your dog’s vein, which can cause your dog’s nails to bleed.
Third, I suggest shortening your dog’s nails on a bi-weekly schedule so that your dog becomes accustomed to this process. Remember, your dog is a creature of routine. And the more you make this a routine, the easier it will be for you to keep your dog’s nails short.
Fourth, I would go slow and file a little bit of nail at a time. Don’t try to go for the “whole she-bang” at once. Start out with a couple of nails. Shorten them. And then continue, until you’ve shortened each nail.
Fifth, start with your dog’s back nails first. It’s been my experience that the “back nails” are less sensitive than the front.
Sixth, try walking your dog on cement or concrete, which will naturally “grind down” your dog’s nails.
Lastly, if your dog tries to bite or gets aggressive during anything I’ve mentioned, stop and consult with a professional.
