Understanding that dogs do not take the time or have the interest in self-grooming as cats do, it is up to us, the pet parent to help in those matters.
The first step is to start early with brushing. Doing this will get your puppy used to the brush and handling. Buy a brush that is suitable for your puppy’s coat.
A good idea is to talk to someone who grooms dogs the pet store and of course, your vet to find out what type of brush is best.
A fine toothcomb is great for soft silky hair this is also good for controlling fleas and getting rid of the mats.
There are also special mitts for brushing shorthaired dogs or you can use a coarse wash cloth to rub over your dog’s coat.
The hardest part of grooming your puppy/dog is getting him/her to stand or lie still while you are brushing them.
Some dogs are fearful of the brush and you will have to be patient and go slowly.
It will even require more patience if you have a longhaired dog that has a lot of facial hair that has to be brushed and combed.
The secret here is to start very early with the brushing and gently handle your puppy’s face using soft slow strokes with a comb or brush.
Patience, determination and consistency will need to be your motto while you are getting your puppy used to facial handling.
Even dogs of breeds that normally are associated with grooming salons can be groomed at home at least part of the time.

Even if you’ve never used dog grooming clippers, you can learn to use them and save a lot of money over taking your dog to the groomer every few weeks. Dogs with short or thin fur are easiest to groom at home. To get started you’ll need dog grooming clippers, scissors, a dog brush, and a leash. Ideally, the scissors should be reserved just for dog grooming. The dog hair clippers should be those made for animals only because the clippers used on people aren’t sturdy enough to stand up to dog hair, which is coarser, and which there’s more of.
Dog grooming clippers can be found at pet specialty stores and some general retailers. A dog who has thick, long, or curly hair will be more difficult to groom at home. With these dogs, expect your grooming to be more utilitarian than chic. But grooming your dog at home can benefit more than just your wallet. All dogs require a certain amount of grooming to keep their fur clean and to improve their appearance and reduce the risk of infections and skin complaints. If you have a dog you can do dog grooming at home, which will be far cheaper than having them go to a professional to be groomed which can prove expensive, particularly if you have more than one dog.
You will need to buy specialist equipment for grooming your dog. Pet shops will sell a wide variety of supplies for this purpose, as there are plenty of different combs, brushes and scissors to use. Find out the type of coat your dog has and buy a grooming set especially for this. If in doubt ask your vet or other professional for their advice. Dogs coats all differ and their needs will also differ.
With the double coat of a German Shepherd for example, you would be looking at a double coat brush. This will drag all the thick under fur out meaning that they will shed less fur in the long run. Particularly if you give your dog a good brush every day will eliminate the problem of excess fur shedding.
With other dogs, especially spaniel types, their coat is different altogether. They do not have such a coarse feel to their coat, it is much softer and much more silky, but it does have a tendency to grow very fast and because of this it requires a lot of regular grooming and clipping. Never use a hard brush on the dogs head and face, buy a very soft one for this purpose. Use a harder body brush to get rid of dirt and any matter which has gotten caught up in their longer fur.
Springer’s do get feather fur on their body when their coat is left to grow long and this fur can become matted very easily. You could use thinning scissors on this type of fur to reduce it down if it is not so long. If the dog has not been groomed for a long time you may need to cut it with straight scissors at first to get rid of the main bulk, then thin the rest out.
It is particularly important with springer’s that you keep their ears well groomed, cut neatly and cleaned, but never clean inside the ear itself. Due to the kind of fur that they have on their ears, it will become knotted and matted without grooming and could cause ear problems which are quite common in this type of dog.
Another area to pay particular attention to are dogs claws. You should never attempt to clip a dogs claws unless you have been taught how to do it by a professional as it can cause serious harm to your pets paws if done wrong. If you are competent however, trim the fur away from in between claws and around pads, then clip the nails.
Dog grooming at home does take some time and effort but it is worth it in the end. You will get to know your dog better and help to keep them healthy and happy.
