For dog owners who treat their dogs as family, dog grooming is definitely a must. With a dog’s cheerful disposition and constant running, it is bound to catch unwanted dirt on its fur, paws, and nails. Even unkempt hair can be seen as unwanted by dog owners. To fix these problems, dog owners usually choose to go to professional dog grooming services that charge up to $60 per session. Given the rising costs of other basic goods and services, dog owners now prefer practice do it yourself dog grooming.

Grooming one’s pet by himself can strengthen the bond between owner and pet. This will also allow the owner to instantly detect things that are out of the ordinary about the dog. An example is a flea infestation which can grow uncontrollably if not controlled sooner.

To begin with, grooming requires the use of dog grooming kits which can be readily available from a number of stores. However, if these are unavailable, the dog owner can make use of household items that can do the same functions as the tools used in dog grooming kits. These include hair clippers, hair brushes and combs, scissors, a blow dryer, and dry towels. It is also recommended to have a broom and dustpan handy in the event that the fur and the nails need a lot of cutting. There are certain things to consider when beginning the practice of dog grooming.

Firstly, constant practice will allow the dog owner to be comfortable in grooming his pet. It may seem hard and awkward at first but once the dog owner gets the hang of it, it becomes natural and easier to do.

Second, the dog owner should know the parts of the dog that frequently need grooming. These include the nails, the ears, teeth, and of course, the hair.

Cutting the nails helps keep the dogs from experiencing nail ingrown. However, the nails should not be cut too near the paws as the nail may bleed. To avoid this problem, the dog must be constantly walked on cement to help wear down the nails.

Ears are easily inhabited by fleas. All it takes to clean the ears is through using cotton balls with water. Cotton swabs should never be used as this may damage your dog’s ears. Alcohol should also be avoided as this may lead to side effects with the animal.

The teeth can be brushed using a special toothpaste and toothbrush that are designed for use on dogs. Brushing is normally advised once a week.

Grooming the hair should be done after bathing the dog. Dog baths should be done at least once a month and should be used with a movable shower head. This will allow the dog owner to reach areas that cannot be reached with conventional showers. Shampoos for the dogs should be carefully selected according to the dog specie.

After the shower, it will now be the perfect time to wipe the dog with a towel and blow dry its hair. This should be done with the dog on a table. If the owner wishes, he can trim the hair at this point.

Do it yourself dog grooming is not only a hygienic activity for dogs, it is also a perfect way to strengthen the relationship between the dog and the owner.

Dog grooming benefits our beloved pets in many ways. There are not only benefits to the pet’s health but also residual benefits. We, as humans, are careful to tend to our hair, our skin, our nails, our eyes and our ears on a regular basis, so why shouldn’t we do so for these beloved furry members of our family? Looking good makes us feel better and it can do the same thing for our dogs.

Regular grooming can keep your dog’s coat and skin healthy and shiny by stimulating blood flow to the hair follicles. Regular examinations of the pet’s eyes, ears and teeth can help prevent any long-term health problems. Grooming on a regular basis can improve your dog’s overall health and prolong the life of your pet.

Even if you take your dog to a professional groomer, it is still in the best interest of your pet for you to perform daily grooming tasks such as combing his coat and examining his body for such things as fleas and ticks. These insects can cause major damage to your pet’s health if not detected early.

The residual benefits of dog grooming include a closer bond between you and your pet. It’s a lot easier to interact with a dog who is clean and healthy than one who is neglected. If you groom your pet on a regular basis, you will be more familiar with his body and it will be much easier to detect problems or health issues in the future.

In summary, dogs are beloved members of our family. We want the best for them and we want them to be happy and healthy. These are the benefits of dog grooming.

Let’s face it; nobody has time to groom their dog properly these days. We barely have time to take care of ourselves, let alone anyone else. That’s where going to the groomer comes in handy.

If you are thinking about starting your own dog grooming business at home then you will need a few things first. Some typical purchases include grooming tables, washer and dryer, cages, and grooming supplies. This can cost a lot of money, so you will probably need to take out a loan in order to do so.

You may also want to fence in your backyard and try to soundproof your area in any way that you can. This will keep the neighbors from getting angry, which can really ruin a home based business. You will need to consider what kind of services you will offer and which breeds, if not all, that you want to offer the services to.

Most groomers will offer the services to any breed and usually give the dog a bath and a cut. Some groomers even go as far as to offer fur coloring and dog facials. This seems a little out there for me, but to each their own! I know that my dog would not allow someone to do all of those things to her, so the dog’s behavior is also something to consider.

A lot of groomers charge a high price for their services. You want to get as much business as you can, so you will want your prices to be a lot lower, at least in the beginning. The cost for a small dog can be as high as $75, so charging $40 will make people want to come to you instead of your competitors.

You can advertise by making flyers and posting them at your local grocery store. Ask your friends to pass them out to their friends and word will travel fast. With these tips you will be on your way to grooming success!

Many people often have the wrong notion that the shampoo people use is also suited for dogs. In truth human shampoo may contain harsh ingredients that are not fit for your beloved pet. In fact, even commercial shampoos created for pooches can often be too strong for your dog’s delicate and sensitive skin. Going all natural would be the thing to do but natural shampoos for dogs being sold in the market could also be costly.

You could actually save on costs if you make your own herbal shampoo. You not only save on precious dollars, you are also assured of the ingredients that go into making your own home made shampoo. You even have the option of mixing whatever you would want to include as an ingredient. A good herbal shampoo would be one that contains aloe vera which is very good for your dog’s skin and coat. A diluted mixture of water and aloe vera is not only mild and gentle but will also leave your pooch with a shiny coat. You could even add a hint of baby shampoo to the mixture to develop a rich lather when giving your dog a bath.

Rinse and finish off with a delicate scent…

If you are using a commercial shampoo for your dog, you can help restore the pH balance of your dog’s skin by giving your pet an all natural rinse by mixing lukewarm water with a teaspoon of apple cider. Use this on your dog’s coat followed by an optional rinse of warm water.

You can spray your dog’s coat with a body spray to leave it smelling fresh all day. You could also opt to use essential oils like lavender or rose rubbed on their skin. These are practically safe and will not result in irritations in any way. When spraying though make sure that you do not get it into your dog’s face.

Making Money

Probably the most difficult - and misunderstood - aspect of taking care of your dog’s grooming needs is keeping your dog’s toenails short.

Often, I’ve been asked “how to” do this and NOT hurt or cause your dog’s nails to bleed. It’s really simple. Follow these easy steps and you’re sure to be on your way.

First, make sure you always shorten your dog’s nails using “positive” reinforcement. What’s that? Well, it’s associating (in your dog’s mind) something your dog “likes” with the experience of shortening your dog’s nails.

I find that treats or some other food works well. But, positive reinforcement can also come from “belly rubs”… or… “the tone of your voice”… or… “a favorite toy”. Basically, positive reinforcement is anything your dog enjoys. The key is to make sure you provide this positive reinforce before, during and after the nail shortening process.

Second, I DO NOT recommend cutting your dog’s nails. What I suggest instead is “grinding” or “filing” your dog’s nails, using a woman’s nail file… or… a professional grinder. This will keep you from going too low and hitting your dog’s vein, which can cause your dog’s nails to bleed.

Third, I suggest shortening your dog’s nails on a bi-weekly schedule so that your dog becomes accustomed to this process. Remember, your dog is a creature of routine. And the more you make this a routine, the easier it will be for you to keep your dog’s nails short.

Fourth, I would go slow and file a little bit of nail at a time. Don’t try to go for the “whole she-bang” at once. Start out with a couple of nails. Shorten them. And then continue, until you’ve shortened each nail.

Fifth, start with your dog’s back nails first. It’s been my experience that the “back nails” are less sensitive than the front.

Sixth, try walking your dog on cement or concrete, which will naturally “grind down” your dog’s nails.

Lastly, if your dog tries to bite or gets aggressive during anything I’ve mentioned, stop and consult with a professional.

Owning a dog is a big responsibility. Anyone who owns one knows that. There is the feeding, caring, training and so much more that comes with it. Of course, we all love our pets and want them in our homes. But, in order for them to be inside, they need to be clean and groomed. This can cost a lot of money to do it professionally. But, do it yourself dog grooming is easy and will save you a ton of money.

There are many things that have to be done. Firstly, it is shopping for the grooming supplies. Make sure you purchase everything you need to handle the task in the best way possible. It doesn’t have to be a chore either. It can be fun and a way to bond with your friend.

Of course, you will have to have a good quality shampoo. Try not to use shampoos intended for humans. This can dull their coat and dry out their skin. That will result in flaking like dandruff. Make sure you also invest in a special conditioner for their coat. It will moisturize the skin and make the coat shiny and healthy. You will also need a special nail clipper to trim their nails. Additionally, a good brush for the type of coat they have is of essence.

Grooming your dog will involve a daily brushing. This will ensure that tangles won’t form and will avoid matting. This is especially important in dog with long hair. It will also remove dirt and debris, keeping him clean for longer.

Preparing for the bath should be something pleasant. Have all supplies within reach. Keep the mood calm and happy so that your dog is stress free. Definitely brush your dog before the bath as the matting and tangles will worsen when wet. Then, wet your dog from the neck down, not forgetting the tummy with the right temperature water. To make things more pleasant and easier for you and the pet, try to leave the head for last. Many dogs abhor their head getting wet.

Once he is thoroughly wet, apply the shampoo. Lather him up and try massaging him as he is being washed because many love that. Rinse him off and repeat the process. Rinse again but pay attention to not leave any shampoo behind. This will irritate his skin.

Make sure you have his towel ready and within reach. Thoroughly towel dry him and then use the blow dryer. Not only will it help to dry faster, it will avoid diseases as well. Once the bath is completed, you should proceed with the pedicure.

This is not always the case, however. If your dog runs or walks a lot on the pavement, then the nails will be filed properly. But, if your dogs nails are too long, they can pose a few problems. For one thing, they are uncomfortable for them. For another thing, they can damage beautiful flooring in a home. So you want to make sure that they are taken care of.

Unless you have a show dog, then professional grooming can be uneconomical and expensive. It is a good idea to have your dog professionally groomed here and there, but what about the rest of the time? At-home grooming can be fun for the both of you, allowing you to develop a stronger bond. Here are a few tips that can kick start your own doggy parlor.

1. Estimating the job
Grooming is more than just brushing and shampooing your dog, and the two should not be confused. Grooming can be done without shampoo and water. Professional groomers clip nails, trim and thin hair, take care of unwanted hair, and even perform dental work. Determine your pet’s needs: Teeth brushing is recommended once or twice a week; although, plaque buildup should be removed by a professional Brushing daily is essential. It gets rid of unwanted hair and can help keep your pooch cooler in the summer. It can also take the place of bathing by removing dirt, making your pet’s coat shiny. Trimming and thinning are often seasonal. If your dog has a thick coat and lives in a hot area, then his coat may need to be thinned at the beginning of summer. Nail clipping and getting rid of unwanted hair are usually performed on an as-needed basis. As your pet’s nails grow long, you will need to cut them. If his hair has grown out and is covering his eyes, then it is time to cut it.
2. Choosing the tools

There is a huge variety of tools, depending on the needs of your pooch.
Comb and brush: A comb is used to get rid of unwanted tangles, while a brush gets rid of extra hair. Soft brushes are often used with short-haired dogs, because the bristles will come in contact with the skin. Thick or double-layers coats require coarser brushes that dig down deep into that fur. Either way, the experience should be pleasant, not painful, for your pooch. Scissors and clippers: To trim your dog’s hair, you will need a pair of sharp dog-grooming scissors. Many groomers recommend curved scissors, because it is easier to shape the dog’s hair. A pair of small scissors is also needed for areas around the eyes, ears and nose. Thinning shears can also be used on dogs with thick coats, since they thin out his thick mane. If you are shaving a poodle (or similar breed), then you may also need dog clippers. Toothbrush and toothpaste: You can buy the two items at your local pet store. If you do not want to purchase the items, then you can use things found at home, such as a child’s soft bristle tooth brush or a gauze pad. For paste, you can mix baking soda and water. Don’t use human toothpaste, because some ingredients can make your pup sick. Never use a brush or paste that will hurt or irritate your pooch’s teeth or gums. Nail clippers: Like all grooming tools, there are clippers made especially for your dog.
3. Choosing a place
Grooming should be a good experience for you and your dog. It’s important that you choose an area where your dog feels comfortable, since you will be handling him in unfamiliar ways. If he enjoys the peacefulness of being outside, then set up a table or relaxing place in your backyard. If he prefers the sound of a television, then make a grooming area in your living room. There will be lots of hair floating around, so make sure you prepare an area that you can be easily cleaned.
4. Choosing the time
You don’t want to try to groom your pet when he is angry, hungry or highly energetic. A good time to try grooming is right after mealtime or exercise. Your pet will be happy and relaxed.
Before you start any type of grooming session, do adequate research. There are rules and guidelines that you should follow. For instance, if you cut your dog’s nails too short they will bleed and be very painful for him. Talk to your veterinarian or groomer about things you can do at home. It’s always a good idea to ease your pooch into the process!

Mesothelioma

Dog clippers are a must for the avid home dog groomer. But some pet owners are not comfortable with the idea of using dog hair clippers for fear of hurting their pets. For this reason, many bring their animals to a professional groomer when they need a major shearing or just a little trim. However, by following some simple rules you can use dog trimming clippers all on your own and not cause any injury to your pet.

Removing Matted Fur

When you use dog clippers keep in mind your particular breed’s fur. If your pet is a longer haired breed, then sometimes you may want to trim the hair shorter to help avoid matting. Clipping the hair on the coat shorter will help lessen dust accumulation and matting that if left unchecked could become very painful and cause skin irritation. Once the fur is tightly matted close to the skin your pooch will feel some discomfort as the matted area is cut away. This will be the case even if you have a professional dog groomer to the job. If prone to nipping or biting when in pain you may need to put a muzzle on your pet as a safety precaution. It is always best to deal with matted fur as soon as you discover the problem. Excessive matting can make it difficult to keep your dog clean which may support conditions that are ripe for infection or infestation. And these issues will also get worse over time if not treated quickly.

Bath Your Pooch Before You Trim

If possible it is always best to bath you pooch before a haircut to remove dirt and debris that could dull the cutting blade. But if your animal’s fur is severely matted this may not be possible.

Professional Dog Clippers

For best results, use a professional grooming clipper. These units tend to be safer, more powerful, and also much more convenient to use than many less expensive models since they are designed for professional use. They also offer a wider variety of accessories so that you can select the best cutting blades for your pooch’s particular type of coat.

Choosing the Right Blade Attachments

The right blade attachments will allow you to get the job done quicker and the whole experience will be more comfortable for your pet. Each blade is designed to handle a certain thickness and length of fur. So choosing an appropriate size for the task at hand will definitely make your job easier and quicker. Cutting blades are usually numbered so if you have a long haired breed you’ll have to select a higher number blade than if you have a pet with a shorter coat.

It is important to ensure that the blades you use are sharp. Electric dog clippers will need to have the blades replaced over time so that the blade will cut without pulling on the fur. Replacement blades can be purchased directly from the manufacturer or from a good online pet supplies store.

Tips for Winter & Summer Grooming

During the winter, some pet owners prefer to allow some extra hair on their pet for warmth. Unless the hair poses other problems such as accumulation of dust or frequent tangling, you can often avoid trimming the hair all through the cold weather. In extreme cold weather conditions dogs, just like people, are prone to the cold. Leaving enough hair on the coat will act as natural protection against the cold weather. Even during the warmer summer months, you may not want to cut your pooch’s hair too short especially if she spends a lot of time in the sun. If the coat is cut very short it may not provide adequate protection from the sun’s rays. Animals can get sunburn, too.

There has been a rapid increase over the years in the demand for dog grooming as more people across the country keep pets. This has fueled the demand for dog grooming schools and training like never before. You can find numerous dog grooming schools springing up all over the country offering formal instruction combined with hands on practical sessions.

If you are in an area where there are no grooming schools you can always sign up for an online course. You will need to do some serious research to find the best school before you enroll whether online or otherwise. If you have to choose the online approach, get yourself a part time job with a dog grooming salon to cover the practical aspect of the training.

What sort of training should the course cover? The basics of on-site or online courses should cover hair cutting, toenail clipping, teeth cleaning, bathing and drying of dogs. The advanced sessions will teach you and drying, ear care, eye care, skin treatments, equipment buying, supply management, equipment maintenance and hair cutting for the various dog breeds including styling.

Once you complete these two levels you will move to the next level which will focus on training you in the various aspects of business. Training will include book keeping, record keeping, advertising and customer service.

The competition in the dog grooming industry is not to be underestimated. It will be fierce but you will have to find ways to provide a service that stands out from the competition. One way to do this is to provide dog owners with information on their pet that they would not normally know. You can build up your knowledge base by investing in attending seminars, conferences, dog shows and exhibitions.

Needless to say, on-site schools tend to have more credibility than their online counterparts. These schools have a very detailed curriculum covering various aspects of dog grooming and entrepreneurship. The course will also provide you with hands on experience that sets you up for the real world. Theory is all well and good but we need practical experience to actually handle a variety of grooming techniques.

The other advantage you get from practical experience is by the time you are ready to set up your own place you would have had good experience handling dogs of all temperaments.

To summarize, a dog grooming school will provide you instruction on first becoming a dog groomer and then an entrepreneur. This kind of education is a must and you should only venture into your own business after becoming certified.
