While some people seem to think that keeping their do looking good is overly expensive, the truth is that cheap dog grooming can be done easily. The areas on a dog which you need to focus on are the fur, teeth, nails and ears. Their fur needs a regular shampooing and well as brushing. Their teeth too will need a regular brushing and perhaps even some dental treats. The nails are as simple as a set of nail clippers while the ears just need a little bit of alcohol and some cotton buds.

When you choose to do the grooming yourself you will be able to reduce the costs. Take the fur for example; get some gentle shampoo, but it does not have to be expensive. Give your dog a bath every week if it is a long hair and monthly if it short. Find a cheap but effective brush and brush the long-haired coat everyday in the direction the hair grows. For short haired dogs, make that every couple of days between brushing.

Your dog will love the brushing irregardless of the length of hair because they just feel good. Nail clippers are fairly inexpensive and there should not really be any reason not to clip them monthly. Remember that your dog loves being clean and fresh just as much as you do; they just have a funny way of showing it by rolling in the dirt after a bath. Above all though, never forget the teeth because gingivitis can actually kill your dog over time.

By: John Luu

About the Author:

During a time when everyone seems to be living on a budget, it is a never-ending process to look for ways to trim expenses. If you own a pet or several pets, most likely you are spending quite a lot for their grooming. It is really important for your pet’s well-being to regularly go to their grooming appointments. However, you know fully well that you will save a lot of hard-earned money if you just do away with it. That is why we will be giving you some helpful tips about dog grooming at home. You can do it successfully if you only invest in the proper equipment and have a lot of patience.

Bathing can be done on a per-need basis. A dog’s skin is sensitive so do not use shampoo designed for humans. It could cause skin irritation. Human shampoo could also cause drying of your dog’s hair and can also cause your dog’s skin to develop flakes.

If you have a long-haired or curly dog, it is necessary to trim its hair regularly. This will prevent the formation of mats and tangles. Regular trimming would also ensure that your dog will not be infested with fleas, ticks, and lice. The frequency of trimming will depend on how long your dog’s hair is. You should make it a point to trim your long-haired dogs, like Golden Retrievers, at least once or twice a month. On the other hand, if your dog has curly hair, you only need to trim its hair every three months.

It is also important to make it a part of your dog grooming at home the regular brushing of your dog’s hair. It will not only keep its hair tangle-free, it will also make its hair shiny. This will also prevent excessive shedding.

You also need to make sure that your dog’s ears are regularly cleaned. This is more important if your dog has thick hair, especially near the ears. You need to trim the hair in order to prevent wax and dirt build-up. Never use cotton-tipped ear cleaners on your dog’s ears, lest you want to risk accidentally damaging your dog’s ear drums.

Regularly trimmed toenails will ensure comfort on the part of your dog when running and walking. Unclipped nails sometimes cause in-grown nails that could be infected and cause your dog pain. If your pet dog’s nails remain unclipped, it could pose damage to your carpets and furniture. Light-colored nails often exhibit a pink protrusion called quick. This quick can be compared to a human’s cuticle. The quick is quite sensitive and contains nerves and blood vessels. Be careful not to cut through the quick, for this would cause pain and bleeding. For dark-colored nails, the quick is not visible. It is best to cut at the very end of the nail so as not to risk cutting through the quick.

Dog grooming should start early on in your dog’s life. It would be better if you start grooming your dog during puppyhood. That way, your dog would get used to the routine.

See, you can still perform dog grooming at home, without much strain on your family’s budget. Just keep in mind that to properly groom your dog, you will need to invest in some equipment like a well-oiled set of clippers, hair brush and comb, a pair of shears, blow dryer, and towels. Have fun!

By: Landon N. Wiggs

About the Author:

Whether it’s trimming nails or trying to bathe a dog, if you’re a dog groomer then you probably see anxious dogs on a daily basis and if you have an anxious dog then you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about! No matter how experienced you are, how good at your job, and how much effort you put into keeping a dog calm, there are some dogs that simply don’t like to be groomed. Maybe they’ve had a bad experience. Or perhaps the sound of clippers makes them nervous. It could be a lot of things. Fortunately, there are some easy ways to help calm nervous dogs.

A little bribe never hurts
Bribery may be illegal with humans but, when it comes to dogs, a little bribery will often get you what you want and there are no laws against it. Many dogs are very food-motivated. If you’re grooming a dog who is only slightly anxious then you can frequently help him overcome his nervousness by giving him a treat reward for being a good boy (or girl). This is a great way to help a puppy when he’s getting his first “big boy” hair cut or having his nails trimmed. If he’s never had a bad experience and he’s simply a little uncertain you can ease him through the entire grooming process by giving him a treat at each step. Clip a nail - give a treat. Clip another nail - another treat. And so on. Many puppies can’t wait to jump up on the grooming table if you practice this method.

Music soothes the savage…
If you’re bathing a dog who is seriously afraid, such as a dog who freezes up as soon as the water hits him, singing and crooning to him can help. Playing music in the grooming salon is often relaxing to dogs. Some groomers find that dogs enjoy having a television with nature programming on in the shop. This may not take away all of their anxiousness but it can help relax some dogs. Grooming products with soothing natural scents, such as lavender, can also help calm a nervous dog. You may want to try something like Calming Aromatherapy Spritzer , a leave-in conditioner and detangler with a calming lavender & chamomile scent.

An all-natural solution
You may also wish to try an all-natural solution such as Sleepytime Tonic to help an anxious dog. Sleepytime Tonic is a relaxing tonic that is perfect to help calm a nervous dog. It’s a herbal and a Flower Essence-based formula that can ease your dog into a calmer more relaxed state. It contains valerian and scullcap, two herbs that have been used for centuries in Europe to encourage relaxation and sleep. If you’re using it for a dog that you’re going to groom you can put a couple of drops on a treat or place a few drops directly into the dog’s mouth. Sleepytime Tonic works in about 20 minutes so you can give a dog a treat with a few drops on it when he first arrives and he will be ready for a bath or grooming in just a few minutes.

Grooming can be very stressful for some dogs and Sleepytime Tonic can help relax the dog so he won’t be so distressed about the whole process. You will be able to trim the dog’s nails, clean his ears, bathe him and finish his grooming without causing him the kind of upset that disturbs some dogs so much. Sleepytime Tonic is perfectly safe and completely non-toxic. But of course, get permission from the dog’s owner first.

The finishing touch
Remember, too, that simple brushing is often relaxing for many dogs. Try to begin grooming with brushing and let the dog relax a little so he feels more comfortable before you spring something on him that could cause him to become anxious, such as trimming his nails. Finish up with treats and lots of petting. Don’t forget to tell your client dog what a good boy he’s been and how great he looks. He’ll be happy to see you next time.

By: Alex Valentino

About the Author:

Going into a big box pet care store and looking for dog grooming tools can be overwhelming. There are so many choices. What dog grooming tools do you really need?

The basics that every dog owner needs are relatively few. Your first step is to get a shoebox, or basket to hold all the tools and stash them conveniently in one place. A portable makeup box with a closeable lid makes an ideal container.

Nail clippers are a necessary tool. Get the size that fits your dog. A Great Dane needs larger and stronger clippers than a miniature poodle because their nails are bigger. That just makes common sense. Some clippers come with a guard that prevents you from clipping too much nail at one time and exposing the quick. The quick is a small blood vessel that runs down the nail but not to the end of the nail. In addition to the nail clippers, styptic powder should be in your dog grooming tool kit. Styptic powder very quickly stops the bleeding if you’ve cut into the nail quick.

Tweezers are useful for removing stickers, debris and splinters. Dip them in alcohol before and after each use to sanitize the tweezers. A small bottle of alcohol should be in your kit for this purpose.

Small blunt ended scissors can cut out mats, tangles, and plant material, such as thorns, from your dog’s coat. Manicure scissors could be used but you have to be careful with their sharp pointed ends. If your dog moves suddenly you could end up jabbing him.

A soft brush and a wire brush are both necessary. The wire brush detangles long fur and rakes out dead hair. The soft brush is used to finish the coat after the wire brush. Even if your dog is short haired like a Jack Russell Terrier he will still need brushing to remove dead hair, dust, and dirt from his coat.

Most dogs need their teeth brushed several times a week so a good dog toothbrush and dog toothpaste are in order. Don’t use people toothpaste, it’s not meant to be swallowed and that’s what your dog will do. Dog toothpaste comes in flavors so dogs love the taste. It contains enzymes that help break down tarter and freshen breath.

Sterile eye cleaner should be included with your dog grooming tools to clean your puppy pal’s eyes and flush them out if they’ve got that green gooey gunk.

Ear cleaner is a must if you have a long eared dog but is useful for any dog.

Cotton pads to wipe out the ears and eyes after they’ve been cleaned are useful. Use a clean pad for each eye. Squares of old terry cloth wash clothes can be used to clean the ears, but don’t use them on the eyes, they’re too rough and may end up scratching the eye.

Once a year go through your dog grooming tools and see what needs to be replaced. Dump eye cleaner, ear cleaner, and toothpaste that are more than six months old.

By: Dee Power

About the Author:

There are people who simply love interacting with dogs, they need to have one around all the time and can enjoy a dog’s company for hours on end. Are you one such person? If you are find out how you can get paid doing the one thing you enjoy most in the world. Set up a dog grooming business and get to spend all of your time with your canine buddies. Best of all make money in this line of business because dog grooming is huge!

Of course there is a whole lot more to setting up a business than just a great love of dogs. You will have to be trained to become a professional dog groomer and learn the various skills required to do a stand up job.

After getting trained you will need to gather information about licenses and procedures for that have to be complied with, which are relevant for the state you plan to operate in.

Investigate the competition, the services they offer and how best you can advertise your salon. It is important to know what the competition is charging and a good way to do this is to phone around to find out what the charges are. If you have a dog call as a customer - to see firsthand how it’s done.

You need to know the kind of equipment that has to be bought for the salon and it is a good idea to buy the basics and slowly build the business up.

If you plan to operate your doggie salon from your home you will need to find out about state regulations and the legal implications concerning dog groomers. Do you need a license to operate from the house? Can you operate from your home and what sort of permissions will you need?

If setting up at home, talk to your neighbors about what you plan to do - no sense creating friction with the people who will probably be your neighbors for life.

The key word in the dog grooming business is sustainability - you have to be able to sustain the business and develop for the long haul. It does not matter if you plan on having a small business or a chain of salons.

One of my favorite breed of dogs is the Schnauzer. With their long snout, full beard, and arched brows, they truly have a unique look unlike any other breed. Maintaining your pooches unique appeal can be a time consuming task, however Schnauzer dog grooming can be a rewarding experience and an opportunity to strengthen the bond between you and your pet.

The Schnauzer has a very soft under coat and a thick, wiry top coat. The combination of these two coats can make bathing and clipping a bit challenging. The soft under coat will mat and tangle if left uncombed. They need frequent brushing, usually once a day to keep their fur free of mats. The best brush to use is a metal comb with large spacing between the teeth. A pin brush also works well for working tangles out of the under coat. If your dogs hair breaks easily, a brushing conditioner may be used to prevent damage to her coat.

If your dog likes to roll in the grass and dirt, you may want to give her a puppy cut. The shorter cut makes bathing and combing quicker and helps to keep dirt from embedding deep into their fur where it is unseen. A short coat will also help to spot ticks and other pests when combing your dog.

Depending on how dirty your dog gets, bathing may need to be frequent. If she is generally neat and clean, a monthly bath will be enough to keep her looking and feeling good. You should shampoo and condition your dog with a quality Schnauzer dog grooming shampoo, formulated specifically for their fur and skin type. Many of the oatmeal shampoos work well with this breed.

Part of your grooming routine should also include cleaning the ears, eyes, and the teeth. The ears and teeth are especially important because they are prone to infection when left uncleaned. The Schnauzers nails will need to be cut every four to six weeks.

Following these simple tips will help you to keep your dog looking and feeling great.

By: Joseph W

About the Author:

There are many wonderful breeds of dog to choose from, but the Yorkshire Terrier is by far one of the most popular and for good reason. They are lovable, friendly, and loyal dogs and they are absolutely adorable. There are a few downfalls to owning a Yorkie however, which you of course will want to be aware of before you decide on this breed for yourself.

Yorkshire Terrier grooming in particular takes a fair bit of time and effort, and so if you are an extremely busy person then you may want to go with a different breed of dog. Grooming is of course important with all dogs but Yorkies more than almost any other need a lot of care and maintenance. Especially because of their long hair, duties such as brushing, shampooing and conditioning are going to be a regular task. Performing these grooming tasks, although beneficial to the owner pet relationship, can be outsourced to a professional groomer.

One of the most important things in Yorkshire Terrier grooming is bathing. Bathing will help to keep their hair clean and tangle free, and the best idea is to give them what is known as a pre-bath. During this pre-bath you want to go through their fur and look for any snarls or tangles, and get these free before actually giving them a bath. This is because if you do it before the hair gets wet you will find it easier to get out any knots.

You also want to make sure that you get their coat trimmed on a regular basis, and you can do this yourself if you have experience or know what you are doing. Otherwise you will want to bring them to a professional groomer for this so that you do not leave them with a butchered looking haircut. You will of course have to pay a fee for this service but it will be well worth it to have your dog looking great.

Yorkshire Terriers really do make wonderful pets. Not only are they great pets but they are great friends, and every Yorkshire Terrier owner is nothing less than superbly proud of their dog. As long as you perform proper and regular grooming, including Yorkshire Terrier cuts, you should not have any problems and you will have a beautiful and healthy dog.

Take care when you are choosing the grooming products and tools that you want to get for your dog, such as shampoo, conditioner, brushes and nail clippers. You want to choose items that are going to be high quality but which are not going to be overly expensive. Check out your local pet shops, but keep in mind that there are also many specialty pet shops you may want to browse through. Shopping online for your pet products is another great idea, but make sure that you take care when shopping over the Internet.

By: Susan Bailey

About the Author:

Dog health and grooming are closely related because this is a perfect opportunity to investigate past the big eyes and the fluffy body. When you groom your dog you get to see down to the skin.

While grooming your dog you are engaged in a hands on everything project. Even some areas you would just as soon not have your hands on. During this time you can check for lumps, warts, and any other irregularities on their bodies.

While clipping your dogs toe nails you are seeing the bottoms of his feet and would notice any broken toe nails. You might also notice any problems on the pads of his feet.

While cleaning his ears you should notice any unusual smell or discharge indicating something your veterinarian should check.

While clipping the body you are shortening his hair, making it easier to see his skin by simply stroking his hair backwards with your hand. You may notice dry skin, or red areas.

While blow drying your dog you are actually separating the hair and looking directly at the skin. A time when you would notice puncture wounds, cuts and abrasions, foxtails and other stickers and also foreign travelers like fleas, ticks or lice.

While you are grooming your puppy or mature dog, you are also teaching them. The more you teach your dog and praise your dog, the more well rounded he will become.

When we are lifting their paws and moving them around we might notice if they are sore or perhaps getting arthritis.

When we look at our pets we see our furry friends but if we look closer we may see much more that relates to the health of our dogs.

By: Katherine Durr

About the Author:

There are many different types of equipment professional dog groomers use. There are things available to you to use that you might not have even knew existed. When you start up your dog grooming business, it is important to have, at the very least, the basic supplies and equipment. Once your business starts growing, you will then have the money to invest in more types of equipment and/or supplies.

The first set of grooming tools you will need are brushes and combs. A slicker brush helps remove mats and dead hair in the dogs coat. If there is a really tough tangle in the fur, you can also use a pin brush. The pin brush allows you to untangle a knot in the safest and least painful way. You will also need a medium and course wired metal comb.

Other types of dog tools you should have are a good pair of dog nail clippers. It is good two have two sizes of nail clippers, one for little dogs and one for larger dogs. If you only have one pair, the larger one should work on all types of dogs. It also would not hurt to have a small container of styptic powder, just in case you were to cut too far up the dogs nail.

All dog groomers should have cotton balls, Q-tips, dog shampoo and ear cleaner on hand. You should have many different types of dog shampoos for different types of situations. Some dogs have sensitive skin, extremely dry skin and/or fleas. They make a wide variety of shampoos for all of those purposes and more. Of course, one of the most useful items would be a dog dryer.

Lastly, you will need to have plenty of scissors and clippers in order to trim and style the dogs fur. If you are grooming a dog breed that has a lot of hair in the ears, it would help to have a pair of 5 inch straight hemostats to trim in the ears. You will need at least one pair of dog grooming clippers with different sized blades. There are two types of scissors that are needed. One type is a 6 inch straight dog grooming scissors and the other is a 6 inch curved dog grooming scissors. Thinning shears are used to thin and shape the coat, especially in sensitive areas.

The equipment and supplies listed above are just the basics that most dog groomers use. As your business grows, you will also be able to grow your supply inventory. It is wise to expand your equipment and supplies with your first few months of income, so that you can offer even more services and choices to your clients. It also gives your business more professional appeal.

By: Heather Chopak

About the Author:
